Fix the Squat ~ Fix the Desk Posture ~ Workshops with Steve Bracken

The Tree Room, 12 Trinity Street, CO1 1JN, Colchester

Fix the Squat: 6th July 2019  12.30 pm - 2.30 pm

In this workshop you will learn how to assess the squat movement pattern in people, test where the weaknesses are e.g. the core, stability or mobility issues in the joints, or a motor control issue, and rectify these deficiencies with appropriate interventions. In this way you can improve your own squat or another persons in the quickest and most efficient way possible and this will be of real benefit to them in daily life.

The squat is a fundamental movement pattern we learnt as children that is important for physical well being in daily life. The example of this is that you can improve your tennis serve but that will only help your tennis game. Improving your squat will help your tennis serve and all other movements in life! Unfortunately, in many cases, as people age they have ‘forgotten’ how to do this movement well. All too often the remedy is just to do more ’squats’ which can strengthen any dysfunction if the underlying issues are unresolved.

Fix desk posture: 7th July 2019  12.30 pm - 2.30 pm

Desk posture is the the modern epidemic that is made up of one or a combination of; rounded upper back, forward shoulders, and/or forward head posture. However, it is not limited to those that are seated at desks for it is also a posture that can form through unbalanced movement habits in life and even false perceptions of the self such as self esteem issues. Its ramification can be neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, and decreased mobility generally.

This workshop is a natural progression from the 'Fix the Squat' workshops as it deals with the upper body. You will learn how to understand and assess this posture and apply interventions that can help yourself or others. In our modern sedentary world this knowledge is useful for our ongoing wellbeing, especially as we age.

Sunday 16th September

10.30 am - 4.30 pm

Venue - Colchester Buddhist Centre, 2 Portland Road CO2 7EH

Join us for an enriching and nourishing full day of practice.

A day where women can come together and immerse themselves in the practices of Yoga, Mantra, Breathwork, Thai Yoga Massage & Yoga Nidra with Sound Bath. A day to help us feel grounded after the heat and demands of the summer, and transition into Autumn.

Come and enjoy being together with other women, and sharing a wonderful space. We are so happy to be collaborating together to offer you this unique day and to create something beautiful.
Love Chrissie Arlene & Sarah.

Yoga with Chrissie:

Hatha/Scaravelli Inspired Yoga and movement. A series of integrated movements that create freedom within the body, whilst allowing each student to move at their own pace. Suitable for all levels - An encouraging, supportive yoga practice, helping you to grow more positive and confident with aliveness & vitality. Accredited British wheel of yoga teacher.

Thai Yoga Massage with Arlene:

Come and enjoy and also learn to give a 30 minute Thai Yoga massage. There's no need to bring a partner, your'll pair up with someone in the group and learn techniques to release tension and benefit from the free flow of energy that this holistic practice yields. Well suited to women, Thai yoga massage is a practice of connection and intuition that promotes spaciousness in the body and nurtures our energy, leaving us feeling supple and calm. After working in pairs you will spend 30 minutes learning Thai Yoga self-massage and breathing techniques, ending with a short relaxation to embrace and hone these nurturing practices.... Think of it as a take-away toolkit to learn how to cocoon yourself and emerge restored.

Yoga nidra & Sound Bath with Sarah:

Yoga nidra is a systematic meditative visualisation practice. Lie or sit and be guided into this state of deep relaxation. Sarah will then bathe you in the soothing sounds of Himalayan singing bowls, koshi chimes and more. Deep rest for the body, mind and nervous system.

All equipment is available for you to use (bring your own if you prefer).

A series of functional anatomy workshops for yoga and movement practitioners with Steve Bracken.

Exploring the Legs - Sunday 1st July
Exploring the Pelvis - Saturday 7th July
Exploring the Arms - Sunday 8th July
Venue - The Tree Room,Colchester, Essex
Time - 2.15 pm - 4.15 pm
Cost - £25.00 each workshop early bird before 30th May (£30.00 thereafter)
£95.00 for all four workshops before 30th May (£110.00 thereafter)

Exploring the Body Series:

A series of functional anatomy workshops for yoga and movement practitioners. These workshops are designed as a series building upon each other but they can also be attended as stand alone modules. This series will increase your knowledge about the body, injuries, and healing the body through movement.

1.Exploring the Cores
2.Exploring the Legs
3.Exploring Pelvis and Lower Back
4.Exploring the Arms

Exploring the core:

What exactly is the core? How does is relate to my yoga and movement practice? What is the best way to activate the core? What role does the core play in Yoga? These are a few of the question that will be tackled in the workshop ‘exploring the cores’ with Steve Bracken. The ‘core’ or rather the ‘cores’ are fundamental to movement and also for a happy body in daily life. Therefore, it is good to have a clarity of understanding about what the ‘cores’ actually are, how they function, and the best ways to utilise them (and also to know the wrong way).
In this workshop Steve will take you through a clear and concise journey of explaining the cores through both yoga and movement to give a clear understanding of this sometimes confusing subject, for this one subject probably has more false myths circulating about it than any other body structure. This accessible workshop is perfect for yoga teachers, yoga students, and anyone else who has an interest in health and wellbeing.

Exploring the Legs:

Exploring the legs will cover fundamentals about the health and healing of the hip joint, knee joint, ankle joint, and the foot. It will include a deep enquiry into the squat and examining how this can be used as an assessment for joint health. It will also cover the psoas muscle and what it really does, hamstring injury, the principles of tensegrity and dynaments, mobility vs flexibility and more…

Exploring the Pelvis:

Exploring the pelvis will teach a simple assessment and self adjustments for the pelvis suitable for movement teachers. On this day we will also look at the sacroiliac joint, lower back pain, disc injury, and simple but effective methods of helping the painful conditions that effect these areas. We will also take a journey through the properties of fascia and how it effects movement.

Exploring the Arms: Exploring the arms will cover the neck, thoracic spine, scapula, shoulders, and arms. This journey will look at the causes of common painful conditions in these areas and methods to help alleviate them. It will include understanding and helping common postural habits such as rounded shoulders and forward head posture.

About Steve: Steve teaches people to understand the body through movement. His aim is to impart the information so that they can prevent and heal injuries and keep the body healthy and strong. Steve teaches anatomy and rehabilitation on the YHM yoga teacher trainings. Steve is a sports therapist, yoga teacher, personal trainer, and martial arts teacher.
